SPIRITAN FORMATION IN SOUTHERN AFRICA
The Spiritan family is decentralized Congregation. This means that we have regional administrations, which are autonomous but fall under the General Administration in Rome. Candidates recruited from Southern Africa, Malawi, Mozambique, South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe do philosophy, Novitiate and Theology in the same place after Postulancy. This means that Postulancy is done in the home countries of candidates.
The Spiritan congregation welcomes both priesthood and brotherhood candidates with same entry qualifications.
Formation is done in different countries in order to introduce the candidates to the future missionary life outside one’s environment.
NOVITIATE
This is a spiritual year - a period reserved for intensive prayer life and spiritual/vocational discernment. A candidate is also introduced more to the Spiritan way of Life and charism. At the end of the year, a Novice takes temporal vows of poverty, chastity and obedience and becomes a legitimate member of the Congregation.
Novitiate is based in Glen Ash, Bethlehem in Free-state Province, South Africa. Currently (2009/2010) there are 9 Novices from Malawi, Zimbabwe and Zambia.
