SPIRITAN FORMATION IN SOUTHERN AFRICA
The Spiritan family is decentralized Congregation. This means that we have regional administrations, which are autonomous but fall under the General Administration in Rome. Candidates recruited from Southern Africa, Malawi, Mozambique, South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe do philosophy, Novitiate and Theology in the same place after Postulancy. This means that Postulancy is done in the home countries of candidates.
The Spiritan congregation welcomes both priesthood and brotherhood candidates with same entry qualifications.
Formation is done in different countries in order to introduce the candidates to the future missionary life outside one’s environment.
PHILOSOPHY
Having finished a year of Postulancy in his home country, a candidate begins a 3 year period of Philosophy and Religious studies at Inter-Congregational Seminary at Balaka, Malawi. The Consortia is jointly owned by Spiritans, Missionaries of Africa, Carmelites, Montfortians and Combons. Currently (2009/2010) there are 76 Students of which 21 are Spiritan Candidates from Zambia, Malawi and Zimbabwe.
